Abstract

This paper aims to analyse some aspects of the sixteenth-century reception of the pseudo-clementine novel Recognitiones. On the one hand, the paper focuses on the doctrinal controversies between Catholicism and the Reformation ; on the other, it examines the relation between confessional dogmatisms and humanistic philosophies. Through a new analysis of the data collected by Irena Backus, some additional contextual elements are investigated. Ultimately, the reception of the Recognitiones in Johann Wier’s work is connected to the genesis of the Faust legend.
