Abstract

Tilted structures may threat the residents as well as the surrounding buildings. Extracting soil underneath the less leaned side of the structure is considered as the most efficient technique to rectify tilted structures. In a previous research, the authors investigated a new technique to rectify tilting structures via soil extracting using micro-tunnels with the application of additional surface loads. Micro tunnel usually has a diameter smaller than 1 m that constructed through pipe jacking, which is the technique of installing pipe by pushing segments from a shaft to another to form a continuous hole in the ground media. This research study is a deterministic search to find the optimal execution parameters that provide accurate, safe, and economic rectification of tilted structures using 50 cm diameter micro tunnels. The number and position of the micro-tunnels, as well as the surface loads, are the main parameters that should be accurately designed to ensure the efficiency and safety of this technique. The theoretical analysis showed that two or three micro-tunnels, located close to the end of the less leaned foundation side, as well as the application of appropriate value of surface loads on the less leaned side of the foundation can effectively rectify tilted structures.
