Abstract

Summary Three studies in two phases examined the comparable value of item vs factor analysis in the development of unidimensional attitude scales. The importance of item analysis in item selection was also evaluated. The first phase constituted item selection, and the second examined reliability-validity. Study 1 Ss (N = 121) were recruited in a random mailed survey; whereas Study 2 Ss (N = 204) and Study 3 Ss (N = 156) were undergraduates. In phase 2 Ss responded also to a scale designed to test construct validity. Item and factor analyses produced scales of comparable unidimensionality, but different content. Item analysis proved to be a superior procedure for reliability and validity estimates.
