Abstract

The Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) has created a new group within the Institute of Terrestrial Ecology (ITE) called The Environmental Information Centre (EIC). Amongst its other functions this centre is responsible for digital mapping and Geographical Information Systems (GIS) within the ITE. This is the latest organisational change to effect NERC digital mapping and is particularly significant because it marks the beginning of a 'new era' as digital mapping metamorphoses into GIS. At this point it seems appropriate to recall the previous sixteen years of digital mapping in ITE.
