Abstract
Using the examples of Amittai ben Shefatya, Solomon ha-Bavli, and Meshullam ben Qalonymos, the paper explains how Italian piyyutim came to form the oldest layer of the Ashkenazic maḥzor. While the works of Solomon ha-Bavli and Meshullam ben Qalonymos were most likely part of the liturgical rite used by the Qalonymide family when they immigrated to Mainz in the tenth century, it is possible that Amittai’s piyyutim were brought to Ashkenaz at a later date, when the core of the liturgy for the holidays had already been established.
