Abstract

Abstract This article presents a case study of the relationship between the Italian community and the Italian language in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) conducted through a qualitative and quantitative analysis. It examines reasons for a serious crisis in enrollment in Italian at the college and university level in a major North American university through an analysis of attitudes of Italian immigrants in the GTA by exploring generational layers. The enrollment situation in Italian is due to pragmatic considerations by students, who seek a curriculum that offers employment opportunities after graduation. A suggestion to increase the marketability of Italian as a language of study is the implementation of a more business- and economics-centered curriculum. The qualitative component consists of interviews with seven members of the Italian community who offered their perspectives on the role of the community and on the possible solutions to the ongoing enrollment crisis.
