Abstract

They appear singly or in groups, on old church fronts, among such printed ephemera as civic proclamations, concert posters, and political announcements. These are the notices by which Italian families immediately inform the community of the death of a family member. Throughout Italy, in towns, small cities, and the close neighborhoods of larger cities, where many citizens have known the deceased and will be interested in the funeral arrangements, these small posters (approximately 27.5 by 19.5 inches) serve to communicate quietly with the individuals who daily pass by on foot.
