Abstract

As a contemporary Italian director who challenges the problematic memories of the 1970s, Renato De Maria employs the comics of Andrea Pazienza, one of the main artists of those days, as an expressive model for accessing this past. In Paz! (2001) he breaks filmic linearity and interweaves stories and characters belonging to different times. Here, I explore how he uses music to sustain these multiple representations within the same time/space boundaries. Further, I suggest that the mix of original score and popular music from different periods enhances the sense of continuity between past and present young generations.
