Abstract

Italy is experiencing one of the fastest rates of aging in Europe, with a significant number of older people living alone in their own homes. However, there are currently no guidelines in place for the design of age-friendly housing in the country. To address this issue, the Italian Age-friendly House Scorecard (IAHS) has been developed. This tool allows housing owners and designers to assess the age-friendliness of existing housing environments, while also enabling planners and designers to prioritize areas of intervention and inform future projects. The development of the IAHS was a five-phase research process that involved knowledge acquisition, metrics development and validation, weighting of indexes and sub-indicators, aggregation, and scorecard development and testing.
