Abstract

The year 2010 has seen strong revival of primary market with about 61 public issues. Its almost inevitable these days for market participants to draw parallels between the IPO wave of 2007 and 2010. There were about 103 IPOs in 2007.The coincidence of the fact that Sensex crossing 20,000 level both in late 2007 and in 2010, and also both the years seeing the largest issues namely Reliance Power (in 2007) and Coal India (in 2010), has heaten up the discussion regarding the parallels. While there are many similarities, we have just made an attempt in this note to see how is the retail participation in these two waves of 2007 and 2010.To summarize, this indicates that while 2010 has definitely seen revival of primary market action, the mood is nowhere close to that of 2007. While the rally of 2007 was featured with euphoria, the rally of 2010 is featured with a sense of skepticism. While nobody used to feel that market can fall in 2007, but everybody feels that market will fall in 2010. From the psychological point of view, that probably is the main difference.Anyways, Reliance Power is Reliance Power; Coal India is Coal India.
