Abstract

A paper in this issue by Ogawa et al. (2013) shows that HSV-2-infected keratinocytes in human skin explants release a protein that enhances HIV-1 infection of Langerhans cells in vitro. This may explain the in vivo observation that HSV-2 infection facilitates HIV-1 acquisition.
