Abstract

Why do women say no to connecting sex and spirit, even though this connection is arguably self-affirming, loving, satisfying, and potentially life transforming? This paper looks for answers in the context of four cultural dynamics in which women's resistance is rooted: selective education, religious belief systems, norms about pleasure, and mind-body separation. Further, it discusses how therapists can challenge these dynamics and find teachable moments to support women's choices for whole-person sex-spirit integration. Information is based on the author's practice of sex therapy since the mid 1970s and on the nationwide survey she conducted in 1997–8, the first to investigate integrating sexuality and spirituality.
