Abstract

Adolescents presenting with a wide range of self-harming behaviors are on the rise. Many therapists receiving these referrals are often intimated by the adolescents' burning and cutting behaviors, as well as by the army of helping professionals typically involved with these cases. In this article, we will present an integrative solution-focused brief therapy approach that has shown good clinical results with this challenging treatment population. A case example of a depressed self-harming 14-year-old girl will be presented, which demonstrates the complexities of these types of case situations and the treatment process.
