Abstract

ABSTRACT Studies have shown that gambling, especially casino gambling, is prevalent among Southeast Asian immigrants in the U.S. And yet, empirical research as to why casino gambling is popular among Laotian immigrants is limited. The purpose of this study was to use a case study to examine reasons why Laotian immigrants participate in casino gambling, and if their culture and immigration history play a role in their casino gambling behavior. Data were collected through individual interviews with 19 participants whose origins were from Laos. The audiotaped interviews were transcribed verbatim, and a phronetic iterative approach was applied to conduct the data analyses. The findings demonstrated several factors may have contributed to the prevalence and popularity of casino gambling among Laotian immigrants – namely, the unique geographic location of Fresno, favorable characters of the casino environment, historical/societal factors and Laotian’s gambling-friendly culture.
