Abstract

Iliotibial (IT) band syndrome is caused by the IT band moving across the lateral femoral epicondyle, repetitively, leading to irritation of the tissues and pain. The diagnosis is clinical with the patient indicating pain (sometimes popping as well) located over the lateral epicondyle, made worse with activities such as running. Treatment consists of physical therapy and stretching, yielding over a 90% cure rate at 6 months follow-up. Corticosteroid injections of the area should be considered as an adjunct treatment as well. In refractory cases, surgical intervention is warranted. Several techniques have been proposed, including IT band windowing, partial release, lengthening, and/or bursectomy.
