Abstract

Through inquiring and collating the historical data of schools and related music courses which were opened by foreign missionaries in China in the 1930s and 1940s, the author believes that under the influence of the skill imparting and advanced educational concepts of western musicians, the music course, music theory course, instrumental performance and singing course opened by western missionaries, especially the music textbook “Music Theory Enlightenment” compiled by Tengchow College, and ten classic songs of “Excerpt of Songs of Tengchow College” have played a very important role in promoting the enlightenment and development of modern higher musical education in China.
