Abstract

Modern industrialization has brought about the general urbanization of humanity. The urbanization of humanity is part of the great project of modernity and perhaps the last experiment of humanity. With this in mind, the author asks whether the city itself has a future and, if it does, then what kind of future. The future of the city may lead humanity to a better life or a catastrophic end. In order to bring the project of urbanization to success the author suggests democratizing the capitalist city, bringing to harmony the urban culture and the ecology, and preserving local cultures and traditions in the face of the emergence of global mono-culture. Though the city as such does not pose any special challenge to Christianity, great changes in life that has been caused by modern urbanization do pose challenges to Christianity. The author insists that the Christian Church should treat the crisis of traditions caused by urbanization as a chance for new hope. In this way, the author hopes that Christianity may anticipate the success of the modern urbanization project.
