Abstract

Prolog is a logic programming language requiring a general and expensive execution model. The model is shown through a translation of Prolog to Pascal. This translation provides a simple framework in which restrictions to the Prolog language can be systematically investigated in terms of optimizations to the implementation. Restrictions, provided either explicitly through source program annotations or through static analysis of the program, are used to limit backtracking and the power of unification.
