Abstract
Most educators are aware that alterantive graduate programs exist in the United States. Few educators understand the exact nature and scope of these programs or the variety of issues that confront their development and viability. This introductory article defines alternative graduate education and identifies the issues and concepts considered to be critical to the conduct of nontraditional graduate study.
