Abstract
Abstract The objective of this review is to provide an overview on the most frequent health and welfare issues that could compromise the health and well-being of sows and their litters on intensive production systems. Also, some farm challenges are discussed that might to be faced by producers, veterinarians and scientists in order to promote the balance in the hard equation between welfare and productivity that represent a way to respond to the demands of the regulatory bodies and markets, and also to the concerns of contemporary society.
