Abstract

The pyramidal muscle (PM) is a paired small triangular muscle of the anterior abdominal wall. Its physiological significance is unclear. The present study used high‐resolution MRI to determine when the PM emerged and revealed its features. The PM was first detected at Carnegie stage (CS)20 and in five of the seven samples between CS21 and CS23. 81.4% of samples during the early fetal period had PM on both the right and left sides. The frequency, side differences, sex dimorphism, and spatial position of the PM in the early fetal period were similar to those in adults.FIGURE: Representative images of the PM (CRL: 58.7 mm). (A) T1W MR image. (B) 3D‐reconstructed image showing the PM (red), rectus abdominis muscle (purple). (C) Diffusion tensor image showing the PM and rectus abdominis muscles.
