Abstract
editors of these three books are Israeli Jews and Palestinian Arabs who share anti-Zionist, socialist political views. They hope these works will stimulate discussions within and between the Israeli left and the Palestinian resistance movement. ultimate purpose of such discussions is to create a framework for a joint Jewish and Arab struggle against Zionism. Israel and the Palestinians gives an overview of the key issues confronting participants in the anti-Zionist struggle, not the least of which is Zionism itself. editors' Introduction and articles by Teodor Shanin and Maxime Rodinson present varying socialist perspectives on Zionism. Introduction suggests that in 20th century Palestine Zionism is necessarily discriminatory and racist; but Shanin argues that there has been a submerged, universalist and humanist current in Zionism which, under certain conditions, might become dominant. These two views lead to different political conclusions. first view rules out the possibility of a real accommodation occurring between Zionists, on the one hand, and Palestinian Arabs and socialists on the other. second view suggests that liberal or left Zionists are potential allies of the Palestinians in their national struggle. Other essays, written in the first person, relate experiences of Palestinian Arabs and Israeli and Diaspora Jews. They personalize and express in concrete terms some of the issues bound up with Zionism, and the Palestinians' predicament. David Caploe's An American Jew in Israel, and Uri Davis' The Radicalization of a Non-Zionist Israeli Jew, are particularly valuable for their descriptions of how living in Israel forced them to take a critical stand on Zionism. Palestinian experience is represented in articles by Fouzi el-Asmar and Fawaz Turki, an Israeli citizen and an exile, respectively.
