Abstract
Isotropic to smectic-A phase transition in taper-shaped liquid crystal is described using Landau theory. Experimental results observed the electro-optical switching as well as a polarization peak similar to ferroelectric in the smectic phase in taper-shaped liquid crystal. This behavior is explained using phenomenological theory. The switched polarization as function of temperature, electric and frequency is described for the isotropic and smectic-A phases of the transition. The temperature dependence of the switching time is also explained. We find the qualitative agreement between theoretical and experimental results.
