Abstract

Ionization by a pulsed electric field of rubidium isotopes 85Rb and 87Rb selectively excited to Rydberg states by dye lasers radiation has been carried out. We have obtained the values of the critical electric field strength for d-states of Rb atom with n = 15–22. Experimentally measured critical strength correlates with the theoretical one and is proportional to ( n ∗) -4, where n ∗ is the effective quantum number. It is shown, that in the electric field with strength larger than the critic al one highly excited atoms are ionized with the ultimate ion yield equal to one. In this case atomic ionization cross section is equal to the cross section of high lying state excitation.
