Abstract

A general expression for the isotope shift is given. Compared with previous treatments a decrease of the volume shift resulted for a homogeneous charge distribution. Modelfactors for various classes of charge distributions are given for the volume and the distortion shift. The effect of nuclear compressibility is revised. The testcase Pb is investigated and a tentative discrimination between different charge distributions leads to a homogeneous charge distribution with small deviations of the density in the surface region.
