Abstract

AbstractThe isotope effect of the proton diffusion constant in ice Ih was studied by using a time‐resolved emission technique. For that purpose we used three photoactive molecules that are sensitive to the excess mobile proton in ice. We found that the diffusion constant isotope effect was smaller by less than a factor of two in the temperature range of 240–270 K. Previously, we reported that the proton diffusion constant in ice is very large, in fact, 10 times greater than that of water at 295 K.
