Abstract

The isotope effect in α-iron single crystals of different purity was determined to be Ē778 °C = 0.43 and Ē901 °C=0.46. A dependence on crystal purity or temperature was not found. The correlation factor calculated can be interpreted by a single vacancy mechanism and/or an interstitialcy mechanism. The attempt to calculate the correlation factor for solute diffusion of copper in iron failed, because the diffusion data available in the literature were obtained with iron of different purity.
