Abstract

The isotope effect for an anharmonic vibrational mode connected with the motion of an oxygen ion in a double-well potential is considered. For weak coupling constants an inverse isotope effect for the superconducting critical temperature T c has been found, whereas a somewhat suppressed normal isotope effect in comparison with with the predictions of the harmonic theory has been obtained in the strong coupling region. Applications to the Ba Pb Bi O, La Sr(Ba) Cu O, and Y Ba Cu O are discussed.
