Abstract

Isotactic and syndiotactic poly-(2-vinylpyridine 1-oxide) and an atactic copolymer of vinylpyridine 1-oxide and 2-n-propenylpyridine 1-oxide have been prepared. The n.m.r. spectra have been related to their structures and have confirmed the earlier observations that there is bonding between the oxygen and α-hydrogen in each polymer. The viscosity of the isotactic form is increased by 0·005 M-monosilicic acid but that of the other two is decreased. Monosilicic acid shifts the u.v. spectrum of the isotactic polymer but not hte spectra of the syndiotactic or copolymer. Poly(silicic acid) shifts the spectra of all there. The observations are consistent with the spiral structure for the isotactic and the planar zig-zag for the syndiotactic polymer.
