Abstract

Contributions to charge-exchange scattering from π 0− η mixing are studied and found to be generally very small. It would usually be safe to assume isospin conservation in πN partial wave analysis. However, special enhancement mechanisms associated with the S 11 resonance N ∗ (1540) lead to the prediction of a significant effect at 650–900 MeV/ c. Verification of this effect would test various π 0− η mixing models and also provide structural information about the N ∗ (1540).
