Abstract

The level structure of 172,174,176,178Hf is studied by means of (α,xn) reactions. The ground-state rotational bands are followed up to spin 16+ in 172Hf, up to spin 14+ in 174,176Hf, but only up to spin 8+ in 178Hf. In addition, two-quasiparticle isomeric states are observed in these nuclei: K = 6+ states in 172,174,176Hf and K = 8- states in 176,178,180Hf. In several cases the rotational bands built on these states are observed. The variation of the moment of inertia with the angular velocity and the population of the intrinsic states in the compound nuclear reaction are discussed.
