Abstract

The synthesis of phosvitin in the liver of non-laying hens and roosters, which normally do not produce phosvitin, may be induced by injection of estradiol. The phosvitin accumulates in the blood as a very stable complex with lipovitellin. This complex can be isolated from blood plasma by chromatography on DEAE-cellulose. Upon incubation with pancreatic lipase, the isolated complex dissociates as shown by sedimentation analysis. Following this lipase treatment, phosvitin can be quantitatively isolated in microgram quantities and identified; in this manner, about 75 % of the phosphoprotein phosphate in the blood was found to be in phosvitin.
