Abstract

Many laboratories have reported the presence of glycosaminoglycans (GAG) in the brains of a variety of species, including monkey, man, cat, pig, rabbit, sheep, rat and chicken (Chandrasekaran and Bachhawat, 1969; Clausen and Hansen, 1963; Clausen and Rosenkast, 1962; Custod and Young, 1968; Margolis, 1967; Onodera, Hirona, Horiuchi and Kashimura, 1966; Saigo and Egami, 1970; Singh and Bachhawat, 1965, 1968; Singh, Chandrasekaran, Cherian and Bachhawat, 1969). Because of the interest of our laboratory in the GAG of the cat brain (Custod and Young, 1968; Young, 1963), we initiated the present studies to quantify these various brain polysaccharides and to investigate their changes as a function of postnatal age.
