Abstract

The history of the isolation of a crystalline estrogen from urine and the follicular hormone from ovaries is presented. In 1927 Aschheim and Zondek reported the presence of a large amount of estrogen in the urine of pregnant women. The 1st crystalline estrogen (estrone) was isolated on July 13 1929. The isolation of estriol was reported in 1930 by Marrian and a few years later estradiol-17beta was isolated from sow ovaries by Doisy et al. These estrogens were then called theelin theelol and dihydrotheelin which are now universally estrone estriol and estradiol-17beta respectively.
