Abstract
Rhaphiostylis beninensis is used in traditional medicine in Nigeria as an anti-inflammatory crude drug. This claim was investigated through bioactivity- guided fractionation chromatography using the Carageenan induced Rat Paw inflammation model. A sulphonyl derivative: N,N -Bis [ (4-methoxyphenyl) methyl]thiourea was isolated and it's structure was elucidated using Mass Spectrometr and Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (HNMR and 13CNMR). The anti-inflammatory activities were enhanced with fractionation and subsequent chromatographic exercises. The occurance and anti-inflammatory activity of the compound are reported for the first time in Rhaphiostylis beninensis. The results confirm the traditional use of the plant.
