Abstract

A novel acidic oligosaccharide alditol containing a deaminated neuraminic acid derivative was isolated from polysialoglycoprotein of rainbow trout eggs on alkaline borohydride treatment. From the structural studies including gas-liquid chromatography of monosaccharide derivatives, methylation analysis, and 400-MHz /sup 1/H NMR spectroscopy, the authors propose a structure. This provides the first identification of a natural occurrence of deaminated sialic acid residues found as an integral part of oligosaccharide chains in a glycoprotein.
