Isolation and characterization of dimerum acid fromVerticillium dahliae

Abstract

Abstract Dimerum acid has been isolated and characterized from Verticillium dahliae cultures grown in iron deficient minimal media. Efforts to isolate dimerum acid, or related siderophores from cotton plants infected by Verticillium dahliae have thus far “been unsuccessful, although distinct changes can be seen in the extraction products from infected plants. Similarly, in spite of diligent efforts, a known individual siderophore has not yet been isolated from soil. It is concluded that the steady state concentration of siderophores in soil may be substantially lower than the values found by biological assays, which tend to be nonspecific.
