Abstract

BackgroundTo isolate and characterize terpenoid and antibacterial activity of 95% ethanol extract from the leaves of Delonix regia. Methods95% ethanol crude extract was further partitioned with different solvents. The ethyl acetate soluble part was subjected to column chromatography and eluted with solvent mixtures of increasing polarity. The structure of isolated compound was identified on the basis of spectral analysis. i.e. FT-IR, 1H NMR, 13C NMR, EI/MS and ESI-MS/MS. Antibacterial activity of isolated terpenoid was against Gram positive, Gram negative bacterial strains observing the zone of inhibition. Antibacterial activity was done by well diffusion method at a concentration of 25 μg/25 μl, using ethanol as the control. ResultsCompound characterization using various spectroscopic techniques identified the final isolated compound as oleananoic acid acetate and it showed excellent antibacterial activity. ConclusionsThe present study we proved oleananoic acid acetate have medicinal property. This is the first report of the presence of terpenoid in the leaves of D. regia. The method of isolation is simple, cost effective and efficient.
