Abstract
A case of an isolated complete transection of the common bile duct, due to blunt abdominal trauma, in a 31-year- old man is presented. Abdominal ultrasound and CT scan showed an intraabdominal fluid collection. Common bile duct (CBD) transection was found at laparotomy and was successfully treated by primary end-to-end anastomosis with a T-tube stent and cholecystostomy. Delayed diagnosis is common, but this injury should always be considered when a patient has bile-stained ascites, abdominal distention and jaundice after blunt abdominal trauma. A review of the literature, possible mechanism of injury, and methods of diagnosis and treatment are described.
