Abstract

1. 1. Six liver enzymes were analyzed by starch-gel electrophoresis from 41 wild sheep collected at seven localities across northern Iran, and two domestic fat-tailed sheep from Tehran. 2. 2. Glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase exhibited polymorphism involving two alleles in all three populations from northwestern Iran but was monomorphic in four populations from central and northeastern Iran and in the two fat-tailed sheep. 3. 3. Lactate dehydrogenase, isocitrate dehydrogenase, α-glycerophosphate-dehydrogenase, alcohol dehydrogenase, and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase were monomorphic in all wild and domestic sheep. 4. 4. The systematic implications of these data from 2 n = 54 wild sheep from northwestern and central Iran ( Ovis orientalis), 2 n = 58 sheep from northeastern Iran ( Ovis vignei), and their hybrids is discussed.
