Abstract

The purpose of this chapter is to move the inscription ISmyrna 753 from museum confinement into the lively company of gods and humans in Smyrnaean life and thought from which it came. From evidence in the inscription itself, three of the six deities are associated with planets (Sun and Moon). Of the six deities, only Zeus, a minor deity in this precinct, and Artemis are mentioned in other artifacts from Smyrna. There is no mention of Helios Apollo, Men, Plouton Helios, or Koure Selene. Although no facsimile brings together the six deities found in ISmyrna 753, there do exist inscriptions and literary texts with some shared resemblances, that is, they contain one or two of the names given to deities in this inscription or make the same kind of relationships among deities found in ISmyrna 753. Keywords: Artemis; Helios Apollo; ISmyrna 753; Koure Selene; Mēn; Plouton Helios; Zeus
