Abstract

The increased utilization of wireless technologies operating in the ISM frequency bands causes cross-interference and performance degradation. A preliminary step to achieve coexistence and spectrum sharing among the ISM band technologies, supporting the idea of cognitive radio networks, is to obtain knowledge of the wireless medium utilization by making use of spectrum sensing. For this purpose we developed a low-cost spectrum sensing device for Industrial, Scientific and Medical (ISM) bands, based on the Versatile Sensor Node platform with dual frequency agile radio modules. In the paper we describe spectrum sensing based on the Received Signal Strength Indicator (RSSI), show spectrum sensing measurements results for the 868 MHz ISM band and pay special attention to use cases of such frequency spectrum sensing devices.
