Abstract

The theme of the annual tourism symposium at the Royal Geographical Society on 26 October 1995 was: ‘The impact of tourism on small islands’. It brought together more than 400 delegates, a record attendance for a fee-paying conference at the RGS. The meeting was convened by Douglas Lockhart (Keele University) and David Drakakis-Smith (University of Liverpool) and the wide-ranging extent of tourist development on islands gave ample scope to explore this in offshore islands in Europe as well as independent island micro-states in the Mediterranean, Caribbean and Pacific regions. Douglas Lockhart reports on the panellists' views and some of the discussions.
