Abstract

This paper explores the life-span of the Al-Muhajiroun organization and its public commentary on the plight of the Palestinian people. The paper will demonstrate how Al-Muhajiroun utilized localized conflicts in order to present a broader worldview. Although much of Al-Muhajiroun's commentary is related to specific conflicts, such as the Palestinian people's struggle with Israel, the organization's underlying doctrine was one of civilizational conflict. To Al-Muhajiroun, this concept transcended historical time and place. Under significant media and government pressure in the United Kingdom, where it was established in the 1990s, the organization announced its closure in October 2004. The now defunct Al-Muhajiroun provides an interesting case-study of the experience of Islamism in the West, which is addressed in this paper.
