Abstract

Averroes and Al Kindi are two major players in the landscape of private Muslim schools in France. Despite having faced controversies, both have weathered them without affecting their contract with the State. Part I of this chapter details the history of the first Islamic school to succeed in signing a contract with the state from its founding through its recent success. Averroes High School made national headlines in 2013 after being ranked the best high school in France. It has also made negative headlines, when a former teacher accused the school of various offenses it was eventually cleared of. Part II focuses on Al Kindi, which at some point was the largest Muslim school in France, and the first to range from K-12.
