Abstract

This paper aims to compare the systems and institutions of Islamic Education and Colonial Education in Westkust Sumatra in a historical perspective. So, it used the historical method by examining the literature on Islamic Education and Colonial Education in Westkust Sumatra. In the early 20th century, traditional Islamic educational institutions renewed themselves along with the renewal of Islam itself. Among them are Adabiyah School, Diniyah School, and Sumatra Thawalib. It’s the strategy to compete with Colonial Educational Institutions which were considered as symbols of modern education. Westkust Sumatra, which is predominantly Muslim, became a prototype in seeing the competition of Islamic Education and Colonial Education at that time. Islamic education and colonial education with different methods and ways of learning played a major role in shaping the thinking of the indigenous and forming elite in Westkust Sumatra.
