Abstract Peter Antes sets straight the popular belief that Islam, which in Western Europe displays an immense plurality regarding its schools of thought and ethnic back-ground, and Western European political and social order constitute homogenous monolithic entities, with each being representative of positions that stand in marked contrast to each other. Taking a closer look at the present-day social and political systems prevailing in Western Europe as well as outlining their historical developments, Antes demonstrates that modern secular Western European democracies did not emerge, in a linear fashion, from the turmoil of religious wars raging in Western Europe in the Early Modern Age in the wake of the Reformation. Owing to this development, even today, it is still possible to dis-cern the influence national church(es) once exerted on the predecessors of mod-ern European democracies.
