Abstract

The derivation is discussed of a novel generalisation of the Ising model which allows us to formally include an arbitrary (positive) value for the spin. This extends the domain in which such questions as the spin independence of critical indices can be considered. This is relevant to universality. The immediate extension of the formalism to cover the case of mixed-spin Ising systems is made. Certain consequences of the new model are also explored.
