Abstract

Dana J. Isherwood, the 1985–1986 AGU Congressional Science Fellow, has joined the staff of Sen. Albert Gore, Jr. (D‐Tenn.), as a legislative assistant on energy issues. After 6 weeks as a Fellow, Isherwood called her role “exciting, demanding, and challenging.”In Gore's office, Isherwood concentrates on nuclear waste issues and groundwater pollution. As legislative assistant, she must present the opposing viewpoints on an issue, she explained. “It's essentially a fact‐gathering procedure, to get the information together so that the senator can make up his mind.” Isherwood has met with program managers of nuclear waste projects sponsored by the Department of Energy (DOE) and Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and with Tennessee state officials.
