Abstract

The present method of measuring plant pH involves usage of a glass electrode meter. The process of testing plant pH curtails removal of leaves, liquid extraction and subsequent measurement of plant pH. This process is cumbersome, inaccurate as well as damaging to the plants. The aim of this research was to test the feasibility of using the Ion Sensitive Field Effect Transistor (ISFET) pH meter for in situ measurement. Experiments were performed to test the accuracy and sensitivity of the ISFET based pH meter using standard buffers. The ISFET was found to produce accurate calibration curves and pH readings. The ISFET, when tested for the need for recalibration was found to need it only when temperature fluctuations were present. Field tests were then performed using CAM plants which show large swings in pH over 12 hour periods. The ISFET sensor accurately measured the changed in pH.
